Built-in vs external webcams

Laptop webcams have improved, but physics still limits them. Here is what actually changes when you plug in an external camera — and when it does not.

Why laptop cameras are weak

The screen bezel leaves millimeters for the lens and sensor. Small sensors need more light, which is why laptop cameras fall apart in the evening. An external webcam has room for a bigger sensor and a proper lens.

When the upgrade matters

If you mostly take calls in daylight at a desk, a modern laptop camera is fine. If you record, present, or work in the evening, the external camera plus a lamp is the change you will actually see.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a 4K external webcam for calls to look better?

No — prioritize sensor and lighting. A good 1080p camera in good light beats a cheap 4K one every time.
