Video call quality

You do not need a new webcam to look better on calls. Position, light and a few habits do most of the work — here is the full checklist.

Camera position

Put the camera at eye level — a stack of books under a laptop works. Looking up someone’s nostrils is the most common positioning mistake, and the easiest to fix.

Background that behaves

A plain wall a few feet behind you beats a busy bookshelf. Leave distance between you and the background so the camera can separate you cleanly.

Connection habits

Wired ethernet beats Wi-Fi when possible; close heavy downloads and video streams on other devices before important calls. A stable connection improves perceived quality more than any setting.

Frequently asked questions

Do virtual backgrounds hurt quality?

They consume CPU and can make the image softer. A real, tidy background usually looks better than a synthetic one.

Is 1080p worth enabling for calls?

Most call apps cap at 720p for group calls anyway. Spend the effort on lighting instead.
