Webcam settings explained
Your webcam hides more controls than the app shows. This guide walks through every setting that matters — what it does, what to set it to, and what to leave alone.
Exposure and brightness
Exposure controls how much light the sensor collects. In dim rooms the camera stretches exposure, causing blur when you move. Lock exposure manually if your app allows it, and brighten the room instead of fighting the slider.
Focus: auto or fixed
Autofocus hunting — that pulsing in and out — ruins otherwise good video. If you sit at a fixed distance, switch to manual focus and set it once. Only keep autofocus if you move around.
White balance and color
Mixed window light and warm lamps confuse auto white balance, giving your face a sickly tint. Fix your light sources first, then lock white balance so colors stop drifting mid-call.
Frame rate matters more than resolution
A stable 30fps 720p stream looks better than a stuttering 1080p one. If your connection or CPU struggles, drop resolution and keep the frame rate — viewers notice stutter, not pixels.
Frequently asked questions
Should I use the manufacturer app or the app inside Zoom?
The manufacturer app usually exposes more settings. Configure the camera there once, and most apps will respect those defaults.
Why is my image still dark after maxing exposure?
No software fixes physics — add light to your face. See our lighting guide for setups that cost nothing.
