The webcam resolution myth

Marketing loves megapixels. Your eyes, however, care about light, contrast and a stable frame. Here is why a 720p webcam in good light beats a 4K one in a dark room.

What you actually perceive

Sharpness perception is driven mostly by contrast and absence of noise, not raw pixel count. A noisy 4K image looks softer than a clean 720p one after compression — and every call platform compresses your video anyway.

The lens and sensor matter more

Two cameras with identical resolution can look completely different depending on lens quality and sensor size. That is why the same 1080p camera performs beautifully near a window and terribly at night.

Frequently asked questions

Should I ever buy a 4K webcam?

Only if you also control lighting and need to crop or zoom in post. For calls, spend the difference on a lamp.
